Bio

Dr. Monica Prezzi holds an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, awarded in 1986. Dr. Prezzi followed that with a period of work in the industry, during which she worked on several large construction projects, including power plants, metropolitan train stations and chemical plants. Dr. Prezzi obtained a Master of Engineering degree from UFRGS in 1990, and both a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1995. At Berkeley, she was the recipient of the Carlson-Polivka Ph.D. fellowship. After graduation, Dr. Prezzi stayed at Berkeley working as a Postdoctoral Fellow. In 2000, Dr. Prezzi joined Purdue University as a lecturer and, in 2003, as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Prezzi was promoted to Associate professor in 2008 and then to Full professor in 2011. In 2005, Dr. Prezzi received the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) Young Professor Paper Award for her work on auger cast-in-place and drilled displacement piles. At Purdue, Dr. Prezzi was awarded the Roy E. and Myrna G. Wansik Excellence in Research Award in 2010. In 2011, Dr. Prezzi and co-workers received from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) the Telford Premium for their paper on theoretical analysis of PVDs. In 2015, Dr. Prezzi and co-workers were awarded the Geotechnical Research Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers for the best ICE geotechnical engineering paper published in Géotechnique in 2014 on the use of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) in the experimental study of complex boundary-value problems. Dr. Prezzi has taught a total of 10 different courses at Purdue and is currently doing research on analysis and design of piles, on the effect of soil disturbance on the performance of prefabricated vertical drains, on soil compaction and on utilization of recyclable materials in civil engineering.
